EMDR Therapy in Coventry
Transforming the way the mind heals. I offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) therapy in Coventry for adults and teenagers who have been affected by trauma, distressing life events or ongoing stress.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based approach to healing that helps the brain process and integrate disturbing memories and emotional experiences. Originally developed to treat trauma and PTSD, EMDR has since been shown to be effective for anxiety, depression, phobias, grief, OCD and performance-related stress.

At the heart of EMDR is the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, which proposes that many psychological symptoms arise from unprocessed or maladaptively stored traumatic memories. When overwhelming experiences become ‘stuck’ in the nervous system, they continue to influence thoughts, feelings, behaviours and physical sensations – sometimes long after the original event.
EMDR uses structured bilateral stimulation to help restore integration between the brain’s alarm system (amygdala), memory centre (hippocampus) and reasoning area (prefrontal cortex), allowing normal emotional processing to resume. Through its eight-phase, three-pronged protocol, therapy addresses:
- Past experiences that laid the foundation for current difficulties
- Present triggers that reactivate those memories or emotions
- Future challenges by building resilience, confidence and adaptive responses
EMDR does not require you to describe events in graphic detail. The process is structured, contained and carefully paced throughout. EMDR has been recommended by NHS NICE Guidelines since 2002 and by the World Health Organisation as a treatment for PTSD.
How EMDR Can Help

- Calms the body’s heightened stress and threat response
- Processes traumatic memories so they feel less vivid and emotionally charged
- Reduces anxiety, panic and avoidance behaviours
- Addresses somatic symptoms including tension, pain and physical hypervigilance
Who EMDR Can Help

- Individuals living with anxiety, OCD, phobias or panic

Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR
The number of sessions varies depending on your history and current difficulties.
Single-incident trauma may require fewer sessions, while complex or developmental trauma usually involves a longer process that includes stabilisation work before memory processing begins. We will discuss and review regularly during therapy.
No. EMDR does not require you to describe traumatic events in graphic detail.
You will identify key aspects of the memory, but the structured process means you do not need to repeatedly retell the experience.
When delivered by a trained and experienced therapist, EMDR is considered a safe and evidence-based therapy. I work in a carefully paced, trauma-informed way to ensure that you feel stable and supported before any memory processing begins.
Yes. EMDR can be adapted for complex PTSD, dissociation and developmental trauma. This typically involves a longer preparation phase focused on emotional regulation, safety and strengthening internal resources before working directly with traumatic memories.
No. You do not need a formal diagnosis. Many people seek EMDR because they notice persistent distress linked to past experiences, even if they have never been formally assessed.
